Teams with a Future

ÁLVARO MERINO with JOAN CAPDEVILA

The main problem we commonly encounter in both sports and business organizations is that they don’t function as a true team. Neither the necessary attention nor energy is dedicated to this purpose. This task is simply left to chance, or worse, handled clumsily, sometimes by implementing anti-team measures or engaging in selfish behaviors that fundamentally undermine the essence of a team’s future. This situation wouldn’t be so significant if it didn’t affect the results, but the truth is that achieving operational excellence in organizations requires coordinated collective action, which is impossible to achieve without solid teamwork.

The successes achieved by the Spanish national football team, winners of two European Championships and one World Cup, are not the result of chance, but rather of a combination of things done well that can be very inspiring for improving the work of teams in any type of organization, whether sporting, business, or any other kind. From the perspective of organizational and individual development, sport and the voices of the athletes themselves become a magnificent metaphor through which to convey lessons for improving teamwork in all our organizations.
